UK Biobank is one of the world’s most significant health research resources, helping scientists unlock insights into the causes of disease.
UK Biobank needed a digital presence that reflected the scale and importance of its work — while making it easy for researchers, study participants, and the public to access information.
Scientific credibility, with a sense of humanity
Through user research and collaborative workshops we gained a clear understanding of the different user groups and their needs.
We were able to share all the news and content on a whole new website that is a delight to use and share. It was built by Katherine Nightingale, Emily Fiddy and the team at Headscape Limited. The mammoth undertaking has been a masterclass in doing what’s right, not what’s easy, and bringing the whole organisation along with the plans.

The new design caters to the range of audiences without compromising on scientific credibility. It utilises warm tones and rounded corners to imbue the look and feel with a sense of humanity and welcome.

WordPress-based, customised platform
Built on WordPress, the site gives the UK Biobank team full control over content updates, with a flexible, scalable platform that can grow alongside their work. Editors have been equipped with a set of custom components enabling them to create rich page layouts within the constraints of branding rules.
Key content on projects and publications is synchronised from other systems at UK Biobank.
Supporting groundbreaking health research
The result is a website that not only looks the part but plays a key role in supporting groundbreaking health research.
